Beschreibung Jorma Puranen: Icy Prospects. Puranen (geb. 1951) ist einer der bekanntesten Fotografen Finnlands. Seine Arbeit ist konzeptuell; in seinen letzten Serien nutze er altes Bildmaterial zu nordischen Themen aus Archiven als Ausgangspunkt und bot mit seinen Aufnahmen Gegenentwürfe zu den darin enthaltenen Objektivierungen und Kodierungen. Zu seiner jüngsten Serie Icy Prospects inspirierte ihn die Faszination der großen Entdecker wie heutiger Nordkap-Touristen für die arktische Landschaft. Puranen bemalte ein Brett mit schwarz glänzendem Acryllack und fotografierte per Langzeitbelichtung Eislandschaften, die sich auf dieser Holzfläche spiegeln. Das Ergebnis sind extrem malerische, hochästhetische, fragmentierte Natureindrücke, in denen Untergrund, Pinselstrich und Reflexion einander untrennbar überlagern. Puranen setzt auf diese Weise das philosophische Konzept des »sublimen Schreckens« angesichts gewaltiger Natur in Beziehung zu seiner eigenen Erfahrung vom Leben in diesen Regionen und versinnbildlicht den Norden als Projektionsfläche für Fantasien und Imaginationen.
